Indians 5, Angels 2: Lonnie Chisenhall belted a two-run homer and Nick Swisher added a solo blast as visiting Cleveland won the opener of the three-game series.
Zach McAllister (6-7) tossed 6 1/3 strong innings for the Indians, who remained 4 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second American League wild-card spot. Cleveland also climbed within 6 1/2 of first-place Detroit in the AL Central.
Jason Kipnis ignited a four-run fourth inning against Jered Weaver (7-7), drawing a leadoff walk and stealing second before scoring on Carlos Santana's single. Jason Giambi lifted a sacrifice fly later in the frame and Chisenhall followed with his seventh homer.
Swisher opened the ninth with his 14th shot to seal the win for McAllister, who allowed one run and five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Weaver surrendered four runs and eight hits over six innings en route to his second straight loss. Mark Trumbo homered in his third straight game and added an RBI single for the Angels, who have lost seven of nine.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles OF Mike Trout was kept out of the lineup with a right hamstring injury. ... The Angels announced 1B Albert Pujols would miss the remainder of the season due to a partial tear of the left plantar fascia. ... Trumbo has collected eight RBIs over his last three contests.
