Yankees 6, White Sox 4: Eduardo Nunez drilled a tiebreaking two-run double to cap a five-run eighth inning and lift host New York to its second win over Chicago in as many nights.

Alfonso Soriano had a two-run single and pinch hitter Curtis Granderson delivered a tying base hit before Nunez's shot down the left-field line as the Yankees erupted for six hits in the eighth to win for the fourth time in five contests and remain 2 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the second wild card in the American League.

Boone Logan (5-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Mariano Rivera set down the side in the ninth for his 40th save. It marked the ninth 40-save season for Rivera, tying Trevor Hoffman for the most in major-league history. Nate Jones (4-5) took the loss.

Alejandro De Aza homered among his three hits and Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run triple for the White Sox, who tumbled to their fifth consecutive defeat. Chicago left-hander Chris Sale was dominant through seven innings but gave up a pair of one-out hits in the eighth and was charged with three runs - two earned - on five hits in 7 1/3 frames.

Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda appeared headed for his fourth straight defeat until the late rally. He gave up four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, leaving after surrendering De Aza's 15th homer.

GAME NOTEBOOK: New York captain Derek Jeter recorded an infield single in the third inning to move past Hall of Famer Eddie Collins and into ninth place on the all-time hits list with 3,314. ... White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham misplayed Vernon Wells' hard-hit grounder in the second inning that was ruled a single and an error, halting his 39-game streak without a miscue. ... Wells stole home in the second inning, becoming the first Yankee to accomplish the feat since Mark Teixeira against Oakland on May 31, 2011.
