Yankees 9, Red Sox 6:
Alex Rodriguez got some revenge for a hit-by-pitch with a long home run and Brett Gardner delivered a go-ahead three-run triple as visiting New York took the rubber game from Boston.

Rodriguez finished with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Robinson Cano had three hits as New York crept within 7 1/2 games of the Red Sox in the American League East and six behind the Oakland Athletics for the second wild-card spot. CC Sabathia (11-10) struggled through 5 1/3 innings but got the win and Mariano Rivera earned his 36th save.

Will Middlebrooks homered while Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in a run and scored another as Boston fell for the fourth time in five games. Ryan Dempster (6-9) was charged with seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings and the Red Sox had their lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the East trimmed to one game.

New York trailed 2-0 after the first when Rodriguez led off the second and was thrown behind on the first pitch before Dempster drilled him in the elbow with a 3-0 fastball. The benches were immediately warned and Yankees manager Joe Girardi rushed out to argue and was ejected.

Rodriguez eventually came around to score as part of a two-run rally and plated a run with an RBI groundout in the third. Boston jumped back on top and led 6-3 before Rodriguez blasted a solo home run to straightaway center in the fifth, starting a rally that ended when Gardner ripped his triple off the wall in right off left-hander Drake Britton.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Sabathia was knocked around for six runs on seven hits and five walks but struck out Jacoby Ellsbury with the tying run on before handing it over to the bullpen. … Yankees SS Eduardo Nunez (strained left hamstring) went 3-for-3 with an RBI before leaving in the fifth inning. … Boston, which completed a 10-game road trip before returning home for three games against New York, heads back out for a three-game series at San Francisco starting Monday. The Yankees get Monday off before hosting a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
