Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 1: Mike Carp and Jacoby Ellsbury drove a run apiece while Ryan Dempster tossed six solid innings as visiting Boston took two of three from Toronto.

Dempster (2-2) recovered from a sluggish first inning, allowing a run on four hits with three walks before giving way to the bullpen. The right-hander who turns 36 on Friday retired the final seven batters he faced and Joel Hanrahan worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to post his fourth save and the 100th of his career.

Brett Lawrie extended his hitting streak to seven games and accounted for the only run with a solo shot off Dempster to lead off the bottom of the first. J.A. Happ (2-2) matched a career high with seven walks and needed 95 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings, but yielded only two runs and three hits.

Boston jumped in front as Mike Napoli opened the second with a double and Will Middlebrooks drew a walk two batters later. Carp ripped a 2-2 curveball off Happ to score Napoli and Stephen Drew plated Middlebrooks with a sacrifice fly after David Ross drew a walk.

The score remained 2-1 until the sixth, when Ross drew a walk from reliever Brad Lincoln and took second on a wild pitch. Ellsbury greeted Steve Delabar with a bloop single to left to score Ross and Junichi Tazawa managed to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to preserve the two-run margin.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston has won four of six meetings in Toronto this season, outscoring the Blue Jays 39-20. … Happ also issued seven walks on July 7, 2009, in a 5-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. … Red Sox DH David Ortiz, who has hit safely in 22 straight games dating to last season, did not play.
