Yankees 3, Orioles 1: CC Sabathia went the distance on a four-hitter and Curtis Granderson shook off an extended slump with a long home run as host New York prevailed in the fifth and deciding game of the American League Division Series.

Sabathia (2-0) overcame a shaky eighth inning to post his first career postseason complete game, striking out nine and walking a pair. His second dominant effort of the series helped the Yankees advance to the American League Championship Series, where they'll face the Detroit Tigers beginning Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

New York held off the Orioles despite playing without Alex Rodriguez, who was benched by manager Joe Girardi. The slugging third baseman, who made $29 million this past season, was 2-for-16 in the series.

The rest of the Yankees managed to do just enough against Orioles starter Jason Hammel (0-1), who retired the first 12 hitters he faced before running into trouble. Hammel was charged with two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out six.

With both pitchers mowing down opposing hitters, the Yankees finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the fifth inning. Mark Teixeira led off with a line-drive single to right, promptly stole second base and came around to score on a Raul Ibanez single to center past a diving Robert Andino.

New York extended its lead in the sixth as Derek Jeter reached on a walk and scored easily on Ichiro Suzuki's double off the wall in right-center. Granderson added some insurance the following inning, drilling a Troy Patton pitch into the second deck in right field for his first home run of the playoffs.

Baltimore rallied for a run in the eighth on a Lew Ford RBI single to left, and loaded the bases with one out. Sabathia responded by striking out Nate McLouth and getting J.J. Hardy to ground out to short in a close play at first base.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Orioles came within inches of drawing even in the sixth when McLouth drilled a two-out fly ball down the right-field line but narrowly pulled it to the right of the foul pole - a ruling umpires confirmed via a video review. McLouth struck out swinging on the next pitch. ... Granderson, who came in hitting 1-for-16 in the ALDS, finished 2-for-3. ... Teixeira's swipe of second was his first career postseason stolen base. He had two steals in 123 regular-season games.
