Yankees 7, Orioles 2: Russell Martin ignited a five-run rally in the ninth inning with a leadoff homer as visiting New York took the opener of the American League Division Series.

Ichiro Suzuki and Robinson Cano drove in two runs apiece for the Yankees, who improved to 7-3 at Camden Yards this year.

Martin drilled a 2-0 offering from Jim Johnson (0-1) five rows deep into the left-field stands to snap a 2-2 tie. Suzuki made it 4-2 with the third of three consecutive singles and Cano followed with a two-run double to break open the game and end Johnson's evening before scoring on Nick Swisher's sacrifice fly.

CC Sabathia (1-0) came within one out of a complete game, allowing two runs and eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in the longest postseason outing of his career. David Robertson fanned pinch hitter Ryan Flaherty to seal the win.

The nearly 2 1/2-hour rain delay that pushed back the start did not deter the Yankees, who opened a lead just two batters into the game. Derek Jeter led off with a single up the middle and scored on Suzuki's double into the left-center field gap.

Baltimore struck for two runs in the third to jump ahead. Chris Davis and Lew Ford began the frame with singles and advanced on Robert Andino's sacrifice before scoring on Nate McLouth's base hit to right.

New York answered quickly as Alex Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk from Jason Hammel in the fourth and scored three batters later on a single off the wall in right by Mark Teixeira, who was thrown out while trying for a double.

Reliever Darren O'Day got the Orioles out of a jam in the seventh after Troy Patton walked the first two batters. After Jeter sacrificed, Martin was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Suzuki and O'Day struck out Rodriguez.

Sabathia yielded a leadoff double by J.J. Hardy in the eighth but retired the next three batters.

GAME NOTEBOOK: With runners on the corners and one out, Sabathia escaped unscathed in the fifth as he struck out McLouth and induced a groundout by Hardy. ... Johnson, who was shaky in the wild-card victory over Texas on Friday, allowed only three home runs in 72 previous appearances this season. ... Hammel yielded two runs on four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five. ... The Yankees left OF Andruw Jones and RHPs Ivan Nova and Cody Eppley off the roster, while the Orioles dropped INF Omar Quintanilla, LHP Zach Britton and RHPs Jake Arrieta and Steve Johnson.
