Padres 7, Pirates 5 (10): Chase Headley hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning as San Diego defeated Pittsburgh for the 17th time in their last 20 meetings.

Garrett Jones hit a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot to center field with two outs in the ninth against Dale Thayer to tie the game 5-5 for the Pirates, whose lead for the second National League wild-card spot shrunk to one-half game over St. Louis and Los Angeles.

Will Venable and Cameron Maybin matched career highs with four hits apiece and Carlos Quentin drove in three runs for the Padres, who had 16 hits. Maybin is 10-for-13 in his last three games; Venable 9-for-13.

Venable walked to lead off the 10th against Daniel McCutchen (0-1) and stole second. Headley worked the count to 3-2 before crushing a split-finger fastball deep into the right field seats. Headley has nine homers and 26 RBIs in August.

Miles Mikolas (2-1) worked around a one-out single in the 10th to earn the victory.

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen sent the contest to extra innings when he tracked down Everth Cabrera's drive deep into the right-center field gap with two on to end the ninth.

A.J. Burnett allowed four runs, 12 hits, walked four and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings and was constantly in trouble as the Padres loaded the bases in four of the first seven innings.

The Pirates went in front 3-2 in the sixth on Jones' 20th homer, a solo shot which landed two rows deep in the right-center field seats, and an RBI double to left by Rod Barajas.

San Diego scored runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings on Venable's fielder's choice grounder and sacrifice flies by pinch hitter Chris Denorfia and Quentin.
