Tigers 5, Indians 3: Rookie Quintin Berry collected three hits - including a pair of RBI singles - and Max Scherzer tossed seven solid innings as visiting Detroit defeated Cleveland for just the second time in eight meetings.

Miguel Cabrera had an RBI single and Austin Jackson and Alex Avila each scored twice for the Tigers, who posted their sixth win in seven outings. Detroit remained tied atop the American League Central with Chicago, which cruised to an 8-2 triumph over Minnesota earlier on Wednesday.

After Berry gave Detroit a 3-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single to shallow left field, he regained the Tigers' three-run advantage at 5-2 with a two-out run-scoring single in the sixth.

Scherzer (10-5) recorded his fourth straight victory and avenged last month's loss to Cleveland after scattering three hits and striking out eight. Joaquin Benoit bridged the gap to Jose Valverde, who allowed a solo homer by Travis Hafner before securing his 19th save.

Casey Kotchman belted a two-run homer in the third inning for the Indians (49-49), who saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end and fell back to .500.

Derek Lowe (8-9) suffered his seventh loss in nine decisions after permitting five runs on eight hits in six innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cleveland added utility player Brent Lillibridge to its 25-man roster and designated OF Aaron Cunningham for assignment. The Indians acquired Lillibridge from Boston for minor league RHP Jose De La Torre on Tuesday. ... Scherzer yielded a season-high eight runs in a 9-6 loss to the Indians on June 6. ... The Indians committed two infield errors, snapping a streak of seven straight games without one.
