Rays 6, Yankees 4: David Price outdueled CC Sabathia and Elliot Johnson drove in a run and scored two as visiting Tampa Bay snapped a three-game slide and drew closer in the American League playoff race.

B.J. Upton homered and Desmond Jennings and Ben Zobrist each singled in a run for the Rays, who pulled to within three games of both Baltimore and New York for the second wild card spot in the American League. The Yankees remained tied in the AL East with the Orioles, who dropped a 3-2 decision to Oakland on Friday.

Price (18-5), who had his last start skipped due to shoulder soreness, looked healthy against New York. He allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six in seven innings. The left-hander leads the American League with 18 wins and a 2.54 ERA.

The Yankees took the early lead with a run in the second but Tampa Bay got to Sabathia (13-6) in a three-run fifth. Chris Gimenez led off with a double and scored the tying run on Johnson’s single to left. Jennings followed with an RBI single and Johnson came in to score on Evan Longoria’s double-play groundout.

Zobrist added his RBI single in the seventh and Upton homered in the eighth, providing essential insurance runs as Alex Rodriguez cut it to 5-4 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. The Rays added a run on an error in the ninth and Fernando Rodney got the final five outs to pick up his league-leading 43rd save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: New York captain Derek Jeter singled in the fifth to move past Willie Mays and into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time hits list. He added a single in the eighth to give himself 3,285. … Upton’s solo blast gave him 23 home runs on the season and seven over the last 10 games. … Sabathia was charged with four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He is 0-3 over his last four starts.
