Tigers 7, Yankees 2: Justin Verlander struck out a season-high 14 batters to lead host Detroit to its fifth consecutive victory.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder clubbed solo homers as the Tigers extended their home winning streak to nine games and won for the 15th time in 16 games at Comerica Park.

Verlander (12-7) allowed two runs on eight hits in eight innings and matched his career high in strikeouts to end a five-start regular-season winless streak against the Yankees.

Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila each had two hits and an RBI for Detroit, which remained 1 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Ivan Nova (10-6) was roughed up for seven runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings to fall to 0-3 in his last five outings for New York, which had its lead in the AL East trimmed to 5 1/2 games over Baltimore.

Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano each had two hits and an RBI for the Yankees, who were shut down after scoring a pair of fifth-inning runs to tie the score at 2-2.

The Tigers put together five consecutive singles off Nova in the fifth, with Omar Infante and Austin Jackson each driving in a run before Andy Dirks plated a third with a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead.

Avila and Peralta added RBI singles in the sixth inning as the Tigers stretched the lead to 7-2.
