Yankees 5, Tigers 1: Phil Hughes tossed his second career complete game while Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez homered as visiting New York took the rubber game of the three-game series.

Jeter, Rodriguez and Eric Chavez had two hits apiece for the Yankees, who concluded a 6-3 road trip.

Hughes (5-5) rebounded nicely from an outing against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in which he was tagged for seven runs and 11 hits. The right-hander, who threw a career-high 123 pitches, limited Detroit to a run and four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts as he won for the fourth time in five decisions.

Jeter staked Hughes to an early lead, belting Justin Verlander's first pitch of the game over the wall in right for his sixth home run. Mark Teixeira lifted a sacrifice fly later in the first and Rodriguez made it 3-0 with a solo shot in the third.

An inning after Prince Fielder got the Tigers on the board with a leadoff blast in the fourth, Robinson Cano hit an RBI triple and scored on a throwing error by Detroit second baseman Danny Worth for a 5-1 advantage.

Verlander (5-4) surrendered five runs - three earned - and nine hits over 6 1/3 frames. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has lost three straight for the first time since 2008.

Jhonny Peralta recorded two of the four hits by the Tigers, who have lost five of seven.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Verlander made his 54th consecutive start in which he has pitched at least six innings. It is the longest streak since Steve Carlton's 69-game run from 1979-82. ... Hughes has allowed a home run in each of his 11 starts this season. ... Hughes' first career complete game was a rain-shortened, six-inning performance on Aug. 2 in Chicago against the White Sox.
