Yankees 2, Red Sox 0: Phil Hughes outdueled Felix Doubront and Derek Jeter drove in a run as visiting New York maintained its share of first place in the American League East by taking the rubber game.

Hughes (15-12) struck out seven while yielding five hits and a walk in 7 1/3 innings. The right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced for the Yankees, who are tied with the Baltimore Orioles for both the lead in the East and the second wild card spot in the AL.

Jeter was questionable for the game after suffering a bone bruise on Wednesday but started at designated hitter and delivered a bloop single that pushed across an insurance run in the seventh. The hit was the 3,283 of his career, tying Jeter with Willie Mays for 10th on the all-time list.

Doubront (10-9) was charged with two runs on four hits while walking five and striking out five in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander had failed to complete six innings in his five previous turns.

Andruw Jones plated the first run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Alex Rodriguez recorded a pair of hits and a stolen base and Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless ninth for his 38th save for New York.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees have slotted Andy Pettitte (ankle) into the rotation for a start on Tuesday. Pettitte has been out since June 27. … Rodriguez’s run scored in the fourth gave him 1,888 for his career, tying New York legend Lou Gehrig for ninth all-time. … The Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate, the Pawtucket Red Sox, won the Governor’s Cup as the top team in the International League on Thursday night.
