Orioles 5, Yankees 4: Nick Markakis drove in his second run with an RBI double in the seventh inning and rookie Miguel Gonzalez tossed 6 2/3 solid frames as visiting Baltimore inched closer to struggling New York in the American League East.

Wilson Betemit belted his 12th homer to lead off the third inning. Markakis plated Omar Quintanilla with an RBI double and J.J. Hardy added a run-scoring single in the seventh for the Orioles, who defeated the Yankees for the third time in four outings in the Bronx. Baltimore now sits 6 1/2 games behind first-place New York, which has dropped three in a row and eight of its last 11.

After being throttled for seven runs on as many hits in his previous outing, Gonzalez (3-2) exhibited far better control on Monday. The rookie breezed into the seventh before allowing back-to-back homers to Eric Chavez and Ichiro Suzuki. Gonzalez permitted four runs on six hits and struck out eight.

Two relievers bridged the gap to Jim Johnson, who worked around Nick Swisher's leadoff double to retire the side in the ninth inning for his 31st save.

With the game tied at 1-1, Baltimore led off the fifth inning with a single and double to put runners on second and third. Quintanilla's sacrifice fly plated Betemit while Mark Reynolds alertly advanced to third on the play. Reynolds then gave Orioles a 3-1 lead after beating Suzuki's throw to the plate on Markakis' sacrifice fly.

Raul Ibanez trimmed the deficit to one after belting his 14th homer in the fifth inning. Chavez, who plated Ibanez with an RBI single in the second, launched a towering homer in the seventh and Suzuki followed with his 100th career blast - and first as a member of the Yankees.

Freddy Garcia (4-5) yielded three runs on nine hits in six innings to take the loss.
