Justin Turner took one for the team as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the New York Mets a 3-2 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Brad Ziegler (2-1) struck out the first batter in the 13th but allowed back-to-back singles to Lucas Duda and Daniel Murphy. Angel Pagan flied out to left before the Athletics elected to intentionally walk Jose Reyes to load the bases.

Turner, who had driven in a run in the eighth inning, turned his back as Ziegler’s slider glanced off his thigh, forcing in the winning run.
Bobby Parnell (2-1) picked up the win in relief.

The Mets took the lead in the eighth inning when Reyes tripled and scored on Turner’s RBI single through a drawn-in infield. But Francisco Rodriguez failed to close it out in the ninth, allowing Conor Jackson to drive in the tying run with two outs.

New York received some depressing news earlier on Wednesday when it was announced that first baseman Ike Davis may need season-ending surgery on his left ankle.
