Ian Desmond belted his third home run of the season and added a triple as the Washington Nationals snapped the New York Mets' six-game winning streak with a 4-3 triumph on Thursday.
Desmond tripled off the base of the center field fence in the fourth inning and homered into the visitor’s bullpen in left-center in the fifth off New York starter Chris Capuano (2-2), who gave up 10 hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings.
The run support enabled starter Livan Hernandez to improve his record to 3-2. The veteran, who became the first Washington starter to pitch eight innings this season, allowed seven hits, one walk and struck out five to lower his ERA to 3.23. Hernandez also had a base hit and drove in a run.
Drew Storen pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save as Washington ended its three-game losing streak. Storen struck out former National Willie Harris with the tying run at second base to end the game.
