Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Robinson Cano each hit grand slams as the New York Yankees set a major league record with three grand slams in one game and pounded the visiting Oakland Athletics, 22-9, on Thursday afternoon.

Martin finished 5-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs and Andruw Jones added a solo blast for the Yankees, who avoided a sweep of the three-game series. New York also moved within one-half game of the Boston Red Sox in the American league East.

The A’s looked as though they had the series sweep in hand when a five-run third inning gave them a 7-1 edge. But the New York offense went to work in the fifth inning, batting around in four consecutive frames.

The Yankees to the lead for good in the sixth, when Russell Martin got a 1-1 fastball from Fautino De Los Santos (2-1) and shot it to the opposite field, getting just enough on it to scrape it over the wall into the first row in right field for New York‘s second grand slam of the afternoon..

Cano’s blast came in the fifth and Granderson completed the historical game with his slam in the eighth.

Boone Logan (4-2) was credited with the win.

Oakland pitchers issued 13 walks in the contest.
