Robinson Cano slammed a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning and the New York Yankees held on for a 6-5 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Thursday in the finale of a three-game series.
Cano's fifth career slam, a bullet into the stands in right field off Scott Downs, was his third hit and came one batter after Angels second baseman Maicer Izturis flubbed a routine grounder that would have ended the inning.
Curtis Granderson belted a two-run homer, his fourth of the series and 32nd of the year, to tie Mark Teixeira for the team lead and help the Yankees cut Boston's lead to one game in the AL East.
Closer Mariano Rivera reached 30 saves for the 14th time in his illustrious career despite giving up a three-run homer to Russell Branyan in the ninth.
Derek Jeter had three hits and Rafael Soriano (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of starter Bartolo Colon for his first win since April 17.
Fernando Rodney (2-4) allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning as Los Angeles dropped two games back of division-leading Texas in the AL West.
Alberto Callaspo’s first homer since May 25 staked the Angels to a 2-0 lead in the fifth.
