James Shields outdueled CC Sabathia and snapped a four-game losing skid as the Tampa Bay Rays held off the visiting New York Yankees for a 2-1 win on Thursday.
Shields (9-8) gave up one run on six hits while striking out six over 7 2/3 innings. Kyle Farnsworth worked a scoreless ninth inning for his 19th save of the season.
Pitching on his 31st birthday, Sabathia (14-5) gave up two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out eight over eight innings. Sabathia was looking to win his eighth consecutive start.
Evan Longoria gave the Rays a first-inning lead with his 12th home run of the season. The Rays added an insurance run in the fifth on Sam Fuld’s run-scoring triple.
Derek Jeter doubled in the eighth inning to tie Hall of Famer Wade Boggs for 25th place all-time with 3,010 career hits.
Jeter scored on Robinson Cano’s two-out double before Brandon Gomes replaced Shields and retired Nick Swisher to end the Yankees' rally.
