Max Scherzer pitched eight strong innings and struggling Magglio Ordonez homered for the first time in nearly 10 months as the Detroit Tigers posted a 4-0 shutout of the visiting New York Yankees on Wednesday.
Scherzer (5-0) allowed just four hits and two walks in another dominating performance for Detroit, which has won two straight after a seven-game skid. Scherzer fanned nine New York hitters and ranks tied for second in the American League with five wins and tied for third with 46 strikeouts.
Ordonez hit a two-run homer against New York starter Freddy Garcia during a three-run third - his first home run since July 19. The 37-year-old, who entered the game batting .169 with two RBI, had been getting booed at Comerica.
Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the game’s first run in the second inning in his return from a groin injury.
Garcia (1-2) struck out eight in a season-high seven-plus innings, but allowed 10 hits and all four runs.
Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano each went 0-for-4 for the Yankees, who have lost consecutive games for just the second time.
