CC Sabathia became the first 16-game winner in the major leagues and the New York Yankees won their fourth straight game, 3-2 over the host Chicago White Sox on Monday night.
Sabathia (16-5) pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on 10 hits to improve to 9-1 in his last 10 starts. He moved to 18-4 lifetime against Chicago after giving up two runs or less for the eighth straight start.
Curtis Granderson had a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove in a run to help New York pull within one game of Boston atop the American League East.
Mariano Rivera got the final three outs for his 28th save.
White Sox starter Jake Peavy (4-5) lasted seven innings following a rocky start and allowed three runs on eight hits, but remained winless (0-4) in his last six outings.
Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the fourth for Chicago, which suffered its third loss in a row. It was his first blast since July 9 and ended a drought of 15 games.
