It’s been raining all week in the Bronx but it’s been another sunny start to the spring for A.J. Burnett, who went 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees in a 7-4 win over the Orioles Wednesday night.

Burnett (3-0) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and recorded five strikeouts as New York grabbed first place in the American League East over Baltimore. Burnett carried a shutout into the seventh while improving to 8-0 in April in pinstripes.

Alex Rodriguez, who missed the Bombers’ last game on Sunday with flu-like symptoms, put the Yankees on top for good with a three-run home run in the first off Baltimore starter (0-1) Chris Tillman. It was a short night for Tillman, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings after allowing six earned runs on nine hits.

Jorge Posada also went deep for New York, which leads the majors with 20 home runs.

The Orioles, who entered the game with the third-worst batting average in baseball, got two-run home runs from Matt Wieters and Brian Roberts off Burnett in the seventh. The Yankees’ bullpen, though, wouldn’t let them draw any closer and Mariano Rivera capped the win with his fifth save.
