Mike Aviles’ squeeze bunt scored rookie Eric Hosmer with the go-ahead run in the 14th inning as the Kansas City Royals posted a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in a marathon affair at Fenway Park on Monday night.

Hosmer led off the 14th inning with a double as Kansas City collected three hits in the inning. Alcides Escobar added a sacrifice fly later in the frame.

Louis Coleman (1-2) got out of a pair of jams in two innings of work to notch the win. Joakim Soria worked the 14th for his 18th save of the season.

Randy Williams (0-1) took the loss after allowing three hits, all in his second inning of relief.

The game was delayed 2 hours and 21 minutes at the start by rain.

Boston, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Josh Reddick. The Royals tied it 1-1 on a run-scoring double by Billy Butler in the sixth.

Boston had several chances to win the game late in the contest.

In the ninth inning, Yamaico Navarro singled with one out and David Ortiz followed with a roller through the right side of the infielder that eluded both the shortstop and the second baseman. That allowed Navarro to go to third base. But rookie Aaron Crow struck out Carl Crawford and got Josh Reddick on a fly out.

In the 12th, Boston got Reddick to third base with one out but Marco Scutaro apparently missed the sign on a suicide squeeze and Reddick was thrown out on the play. Then, in the 13th, Boston had another runner on third with one out but Navarro fouled out and Ortiz grounded out.

Kevin Youkilis left the game in the seventh inning with a tight hamstring.
