David Ortiz hit the tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning as the Boston Red Sox outslugged the New York Yankees 7-5 Sunday night to cap a three-game sweep in the Bronx.

It was the fifth victory in six tries for the Red Sox against their American League East rival and bumped Boston's record up to .500 for the first time all season.

New York managed to snap Adrian Gonzalez’s four-game homer streak but couldn’t keep a pair of old foes in the ballpark. Kevin Youkilis’ three-run shot off Freddy Garcia tied the game 4-4 in the third before Ortiz’ solo blast put Boston up for good.

Garcia (2-3) allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits in 5 1/3 innings for New York, which is on a five-game losing streak for the first time in more than two years.

Andruw Jones and Curtis Granderson went deep in the second off Jon Lester to give the Yankees an early lead, but the bullpen held steady before Jonathan Papelbon shut down the side in the ninth for his seventh save. Lester (5-1) allowed four earned runs on five hits and struck out seven in six innings for his fifth straight win.

Jorge Posada drew a walk as a pinch hitter in the eighth and received plenty of cheers after he apologized before the game to manager Joe Girardi for demanding to be removed from Saturday’s lineup.
