Dillon Gee got the better of Yunesky Maya in a matchup of two rookie pitchers making their MLB debuts as the New York Mets topped the Washington Nationals 4-1.

Gee showed some serious poise through seven innings of two-hit ball, allowing only one run on Willie Harris’ solo dinger while striking out four and walking three. The 24-year-old was called up to fill in for Johan Santana, who’s out with a pectoral strain.

Mets first baseman Ike Davis hit a three-run shot, his 19th homer of the year, in the first inning. The Mets made the most of their chances, going 2-for-2 with runners in scoring position. Davis finished with two hits and a walk to go along with the home run.Yuneksy Maya, the 29-year-old out of Cuba, gave up four

runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two.

Hisanori Takahasi came on and worked the ninth inning, putting two on but getting a double-play ball to earn the save.
