Barry Zito allowed just two hits over eight innings and struck out 10 batters to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 1-0 victory over the visiting New York Mets on Friday night.
Aubrey Huff went 3-for-3 with a walk as San Francisco won for the ninth time in the last 11 games.
Zito (8-4) matched his season high for strikeouts – one short of his career-best – while winning for just the second time in his last 11 starts.
All-Star closer Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 24th save. Wilson gave up a two-out single to David Wright but then struck out Carlos Beltran to end the contest.
The lone run Zito needed crossed the plate in the fourth inning. Huff walked, advanced to third on Buster Posey’s double and scored on Pat Burrell’s fielder’s choice when he beat the throw home.
Mets starter Jonathon Niese (6-4) pitched solidly, giving up one run and six hits in seven innings.
