Mike Pelfrey tossed seven strong innings and Jose Reyes drove in a pair as the New York Mets shut out the Philadelphia Phillies for the third day in a row, 3-0, on Thursday.

Jason Bay added an RBI single and Angel Pagan chipped in two hits for the Mets, who have won five straight and are suddenly only two games behind the Phillies in the National League East.

New York outscored Philadelphia 16-0 in the three-game series.

It was Pelfrey’s turn on Thursday and the right-hander was up to the challenge, allowing three hits while striking out five and walking five to pick up his team-leading seventh win of the season and lower his ERA to 2.54.

Reyes and Bay combined to give Pelfrey all the support he would need in the first. Reyes led off with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout before scoring on Bay’s double. Reyes capped the scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.

One of the top offenses in baseball, the Phillies have managed a total of three runs over their past five games - all loses.

Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels (5-3) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.
