Johan Santana pitched six solid innings and the New York Mets won their first series of the season in defeating the Chicago Cubs, 5-2, on Thursday night.
Santana (2-1) allowed one run on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks for the win. Closer Francisco Rodriguez got his first save with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Rookie first baseman Ike Davis had three hits and scored two runs to pace the Mets.
The Mets broke open a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the sixth inning. Two of the runs scored on an error, while David Wright smacked a double for a run and Jeff Francoeur knocked in another run with a single for the 4-0 lead.
Rod Barajas brought in a run in the bottom of the eighth with a single that scored Davis.
Tom Gorzelanny (0-2) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for the Cubs, surrendering two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings with seven striekouts.
