Miguel Montero finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a seven-game skid with a 9-6 victory over the struggling New York Mets on Friday.
Kelly Johnson hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and Montero’s three-run shot off Raul Valdez (2-3) capped a five-run sixth. Jose Reyes’ one-out error opened the floodgates.
The Mets lost for the 14th time in their last 19 games and trail the Atlanta Braves by seven games in the NL East. They wasted a huge night from David Wright, who returned to the lineup after a rare day off and homered in his first two at bats and finished with five RBIs.
Arizona's comeback made a winner out of Ian Kennedy (6-8), whose only two mistakes were the home runs by Wright. The right-hander allowed five runs and three hits in six innings.
Blain Boyer threw the seventh and Chad Qualls worked the eight before former Met Aaron Heilman closed it out for his fourth save of the season.
The last-place Diamondbacks continue to give the Mets headaches. Arizona swept a three-game series from New York last week.
