SAN FRANCISCO -- Asked to identify the highlight of his day, the journeyman player who hit the tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning of the Sunday game between the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants struggled for an answer.

That was how eventful Pedro Florimon's afternoon was.

A minor-leaguer at the beginning of the week, Florimon capped the day of his life with the biggest of six Phillies hits in a three-run eighth that sent Philadelphia to a 5-2 victory over the Giants and a split of the four-game series.

The Phillies (45-77) and Giants (50-76) began the series as the two losingest teams in baseball, and they finished it that way as well after Philadelphia won Saturday and Sunday to capture the season series 4-3.

"I'm excited about a lot of things," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said after the come-from-behind win. "There's a lot of good things going on."

The loss formally eliminated the Giants from contention in the National League West. San Francisco trails the Los Angeles Dodgers by 39 games.

The Phillies trailed 2-1 before stringing together five consecutive one-out singles in the eighth against right-hander Hunter Strickland (2-3), the third Giants pitcher.

Jorge Alfaro tied the game with the third of the five hits, scoring Rhys Hoskins. Alfaro has recorded at least one hit in all seven games he has played for the Phillies this season.

After Nick Williams singled to load the bases, Florimon delivered his difference-making hit to right field, scoring Maikel Franco and Alfaro.

"I just play to have fun. Everything is good right now," said the seven-year major-leaguer who is now with his fourth team. "The team is doing well right now and I'm just happy to help us win."

The hits by Alfaro and Florimon came with two strikes.

"We stress having a two-strike approach, and I'd like to believe these guys are listening to us," Mackanin said. "Put the ball in play and good things can happen."

The big hit by Florimon, starting in left field, capped a day in which he threw out Buster Posey at the plate on a base hit, made a diving catch and produced the Phillies' only run against Giants starter Madison Bumgarner with a second-inning double.

He was playing left field for the first time in his 260-game major league career.

"I'm not surprised. I feel comfortable (in left field)," Florimon said. "Basically, I play every position."

The Phillies' three-run eighth ended when Giants right fielder Gorkys Hernandez threw out Williams at the plate after the sixth hit of the inning, a two-out, two-strike single by pinch hitter Ty Kelly.

The Giants threatened to get even or perhaps go back ahead in the bottom of the eighth, but Phillies closer Hector Neris struck out Pablo Sandoval to end a bases-loaded threat and retain the 4-2 lead.

Neris had hit Posey, the first batter he faced, in the ribs with his first pitch to load the bases for Sandoval.

"I'm certain that he hit me on purpose," said Posey, who had a brief stare-down with Neris. "It's just a shame because I wanted to compete that at-bat and he's got good stuff. But I guess he didn't feel like he could get me out."

After Hoskins provided an insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the ninth, Neris survived a shaky bottom of the inning, striking out Denard Span as the potential tying run for his 15th save.

Left-hander Adam Morgan (2-1), who pitched a scoreless seventh inning, got the win.

Neither starter -- the Giants' Bumgarner and Phillies' Ben Lively -- got a decision after being involved in a pitchers' duel for six innings.

Bumgarner got the better of it, allowing just four hits and one run in his six innings. He walked one and struck out seven before leaving with a 2-1 lead after throwing 111 pitches.

"We had it lined up like we wanted as far as the bullpen," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of pulling his ace with a one-run lead. "Strick just had an off day."

Bumgarner said of his high pitch count, "Some games are going to be like that. There were a lot of foul balls, a lot of deep counts. I definitely feel good about leaving us with a chance to win."

Lively, called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make the start, allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, yet remained winless since his major league debut against the Giants on June 3. He walked two and struck out four.

Posey and Bumgarner had RBI hits off Lively to account for the Giants' scoring.

Florimon finished with a career-best-tying three RBIs for the Phillies, who had lost the first five games of their Western swing before winning Saturday and Sunday.

Florimon, Hoskins, Franco and Williams collected two hits apiece for the Phillies, who out-hit the Giants 13-10.

The home run capped a 5-for-13, two-homer series for Hoskins, a Sacramento native who was making his first California trip as a major-leaguer. Philadelphia began the seven-day trip in San Diego.

"This is a good burst of energy for the organization," said Hoskins, one of several current Phillies who were playing at Triple-A earlier this season. "Hopefully it will carry over to the homestand."

Posey and Brandon Crawford had two hits apiece for the Giants, who were seeking to win three straight home series for the first time since May.

NOTES: The home run by Philadelphia 1B/LF Rhys Hoskins was his fifth in his first 11 major league games, a first in Phillies history. ... LF Pedro Florimon's outfield assist was the Phillies' 25th of the season, the second most in the National League behind Cincinnati's 31. ... Before promoting RHP Ben Lively from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday, the Phillies played the previous two games with just 24 available players. ... The Giants continue a seven-game homestand with a visit from the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night. Twenty-seven of the Giants' final 37 games will be against teams currently over .500. ... After getting a day off Monday, the Phillies will open a 10-game homestand with a doubleheader against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
