HOUSTON -- Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin fell just shy of his first complete game in four seasons while concluding what was an all-or-nothing series for the Houston Astros offensively.

Corbin pitched brilliantly while scattering four hits over 8 2/3 innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a split of their four-game, home-and-home interleague series with the Houston Astros with a 4-0 victory on Thursday at Minute Maid Park.

Corbin (10-11) struck out seven batters, issued one walk and threw 71 of 105 pitches for strikes. He did not surrender an extra-base hit until Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel roped a two-out double to left in the ninth inning, costing Corbin a chance at his fourth career complete game and first since working eight innings in a 3-0 loss at San Francisco on Sept. 6, 2013.

"I just felt really good with all my pitches," Corbin said. "I made quality pitches throughout the game and that's a really good team. Just got to lock it in and they have some really good hitters. They made it tough in that first inning. I thought I made a couple of mistakes but then I was able to settle in."

Right-hander Archie Bradley relieved Corbin and retired Marwin Gonzalez on a called third strike to preserve the shutout, the second scoreless loss of the series for the Astros, who totaled 18 runs in wins over Arizona on Tuesday in Phoenix and Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park.

Corbin retired 11 consecutive batters before the Gurriel double.

The Diamondbacks (67-54) scored the decisive run in the third inning when catcher Jeff Mathis delivered an RBI single that scored Ketel Marte from third base. Daniel Descalso added an inside-the-park home run in the fourth, the third of the season for Arizona, when his fly ball to center field ricocheted off the wall and past pursuing Astros center fielder Jake Marisnick.

For Descalso, it was his seventh home run on the season.

"I hit it good and it took a nice bounce for me," Descalso said. "It kicked off that wall hard and kicked toward center. I just tried to go as fast as I could. Watched (third base coach) Tony Perezchica and he kept waving me. In the end, we scored a run on it."

Arizona third baseman Jake Lamb added the second home run off Astros right-hander Mike Fiers (7-8) leading off the sixth, his 26th homer carrying into the home bullpen in right-center.

Fiers was pulled after facing two additional batters in the sixth. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

"I think it was just the third inning where I was a little shaky and couldn't really find the zone," Fiers said. "That can hurt you, even though they only scored one run there, it was taxing on me and gave them a little momentum that ended up costing me."

The Astros (74-47) surrendered an unearned run in the eighth inning when an errant throw by catcher Max Stassi enabled David Peralta to score as he advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Given how effectively Corbin pitched, the additional run support wasn't necessary.

"He was throwing good first-pitch sliders and then the at-bat as it got longer he made us chase a little bit with a really, really good slider," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Corbin. "It's a good version of him. He's tough when he can throw it for a strike and throw it for a ball. Had a pretty good fastball in for our right-handed hitters. He had a really good game."

NOTES: Diamondbacks RHP Rubby De La Rosa will require a second Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. De La Rosa previously underwent the procedure in 2011.
