DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies got a huge lift from their bullpen and a late hit from DJ LeMahieu on Friday night and came back to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3.

It was Colorado's third straight one-run win -- they had two 5-4 walkoff victories over the New York Mets earlier in the week -- and improved their record in one-run games to 14-7 overall and 8-2 at Coors Field.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Phillies, who are winless on their current eight-game road trip. It was also their major league-leading 29th one-run defeat. They have 14 such wins.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland left the game with a left groin strain after throwing 11 pitches, 10 strikes, in one-third of an inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Cesar Hernandez, who stole second as Freeland struck out Freddy Galvis. Freeland left with the count 0-2 on Aaron Altherr, grimacing after throwing what proved to be his final pitch.

Chris Rusin came on and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings and threw a career-high 58 pitches. The Rockies used Antonio Senzatela for two innings, Scott Oberg for one and Mike Dunn (4-1) for 1 1/3 before closer Greg Holland set the side down in order to earn his 34th save in 35 opportunities.

"It's definitely tough, but it happens every now and then," Dunn said. "No one is really ready at that point to go in the game. You're just trying to settle in. The job Rusin did tonight was unbelievable."

Phillies starter Vince Velasquez threw 36 pitches, 18 strikes, in the first when with two outs, he issued two walks to load the bases for Carlos Gonzalez. His ground ball to right found a hole in the Phillies' shift.

Those were the only two runs off Velaszquez, who gave up three hits in five innings with a career-high six walks and four strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches, never retired the side in order but got through his final four innings on 60 pitches.

"He was effectively wild," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "Walked six players and didn't issue many hits but sprayed the ball all over the place. I don't think they felt comfortable against him."

Velasquez said his tempo was too quick at the outset, something he rectified after a visit from pitching coach Bob McClure in the prolonged first inning.

"What we're looking for from him is to throw 96 pitches in more innings," Mackanin said. "That's the next step for him. We need him to economize his pitches and get outs early in the count so that he can go deeper into the game."

A two-run sixth enabled the Phillies to tie the game at 2 against Senzatela. Altherr led off with a single and scored on Nick Williams' one-out double. Maikel Franco followed with his first triple of the season.

Hernandez opened the seventh with a double. He took third on Freddy Galvis'slow chopper to shortstop and scored on Altherr's one-out single off the glove of drawn-in shortstop Alexi Amarista to give the Phillies a short-lived 3-2 lead.

Altherr played right field in the seventh but after the inning said he re-aggravated his right hamstring. He went on the disabled list July 26 and missed 10 games when he strained that hamstring, and after the game, Mackanin said Altherr was headed back to the disabled list.

Nolan Arenado tied the game in the seventh when he hit his 25th homer and his third in eight games, and the Rockies won it in the eighth against Luis Garcia (1-3).

He issued a leadoff walk to Pat Valaika, who took second on catcher Cameron Rupp's passed ball. With two outs, Mackanin decided to intentionally walk left-handed hitting Charlie Blackmon and have Garcia pitch to the right-handed hitting LeMahieu.

He bounced a single into right field for his first go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning or later since Sept. 15, 2015, at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I didn't think he was disrespecting me or anything like that," LeMahieu said. "But it did feel good to come through in that situation.

NOTES: Phillies RHP Ricardo Pinto and C Jorge Alfaro were recalled from Lehigh Valley, and IF Ty Kelley and RHP Jake Thompson were optioned to the Triple-A team. ...
