HOUSTON -- The image of Rays right fielder Steven Souza Jr. limping around the bases following his sixth-inning home run served as the perfect embodiment of the collective toughness the Rays showcased in bouncing back from a rough start to this eight-game road trip.

Souza added a go-ahead two-run double to his earlier homer as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 5-3 victory and series win over the Houston Astros on Thursday night at Minute Maid Park.

Souza, hampered by a left foot contusion, clubbed his 23rd home run and labored noticeably around the bases one plate appearance before his two-out double off Astros All-Star reliever Chris Devenski snapped a 3-3 tie and scored Lucas Duda and Evan Longoria in the seventh.

"I'm thankful that I was as productive as I was; I couldn't have told you that was going to happen," Souza said. "When I found out it wasn't broken that was a good sign that I was going to try to push through it. So, I was thankful to get the chance and get in there."

The Rays (57-53) initiated their rally off Astros left-hander Francisco Liriano (6-6), who failed to retire either of the two left-handed hitters he faced -- Corey Dickerson (3-for-5) and Duda.

Longoria reached on a one-out fielding error by Houston shortstop Alex Bregman, the third error of the game for the Astros (69-39). Two batters later, Souza delivered.

Houston matched its season-long losing streak at three games and has lost six of its last eight.

"We just have to get back to being ourselves," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "I don't think there's a ton to fix. Other than we just need to play and play well. The remedy is just getting back to playing clean baseball."

After surrendering 14 runs in the opener, Tampa Bay claimed the final three games of the series by a total of seven runs. Right-hander Brad Boxberger (3-3) earned the victory in relief.

"It's huge," Dickerson said of the 4-4 road trip. "We never stopped believing. Those were tough games and we could have won two more of those games in New York (against the Yankees) and that really gave us confidence. We played our ball the last two days and fed off one another and we feel really good about ourselves right now."

The Astros spotted right-hander Collin McHugh a 3-1 lead courtesy of an RBI double from Yuli Gurriel that scored Bregman in the first inning, a solo home run by Jose Altuve, his 16th on the season, in the third and a Bregman run-scoring single that plated Jake Marisnick in the fifth.

All three runs were charged to Rays left-hander Blake Snell, who remained winless on the season after allowing seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four-plus innings.

After throwing 77 pitches in his first start of the season July 22 and 82 seven days later, McHugh extended his pitch count to 100 while completing six solid innings.

McHugh posted only one clean inning, the fourth while facing the bottom of the order, but worked around runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings to produce scoreless frames each time. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts.

"It feels good to throw a full 100 pitches, to get a full game in," McHugh said. "It's been a long time for me. So, I think it's a step in the right direction for sure. I thought (catcher Evan) Gattis had a really good game plan for us tonight. Worked really hard back there."

The Rays struck for solo runs in the second and sixth, with Dickerson delivering a two-out RBI single in the second to score Brad Miller and tie the game at 1-1.

Souza lined a leadoff homer 350 feet down the left-field line in the sixth to slice the deficit to 3-2 after falling behind 0-2 and then working the count full. Souza finished 2-for-4 with a walk.
