LOS ANGELES -- In a day filled with drama for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Matt Moore produced some additional riveting theater to cap the night.

The Giants left-hander came within an out of recording his first major league no-hitter, and San Francisco beat the Dodgers 4-0 Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.

Moore held the Dodgers hitless until shortstop Corey Seager blooped a single to right field to end the bid with two outs in the ninth. Giants closer Santiago Casilla then came on in relief and forced Justin Turner to pop out to clinch the victory.

"I'm happy. It's a happy room in there," said Moore of the Giants' locker room. "You never want to get swept, I don't think under any circumstances, so for us to have a happy flight home, I'm definitely proud of the way things went today and the defense and putting up those runs to take the pressure off. It was a great game for us."

Moore's gem came hours after the Dodgers traded popular catcher A.J. Ellis and a minor league pitcher to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Carlos Ruiz in a move that stunned many in the Los Angeles clubhouse. However, that move was practically forgotten as Moore mowed down the Dodgers' hitters.

Moore wound up allowing a hit and three walks while striking out seven in 8 2/3 innings. He threw a career-high 133 pitches, the most thrown by any major league pitcher this season. Moore has limited the Dodgers to an unearned run and five hits in 15 1/3 innings the past two times he faced them.

"Today was fun. Hopefully, moving forward, we can build off this," said Moore, who tossed a no-hitter in 2011 for the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits.

Joe Panik homered and drove in two runs for the Giants (69-58), who snapped a four-game losing streak and dropped the Dodgers' lead in the National League West to two games.

Los Angeles (71-56) had its four-game winning streak halted. The Dodgers won two of three in the series.

"He had everything working tonight," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Moore. "He saved us from getting swept. That's the last thing we wanted here. If you look at the game, this game was probably as big as any game we've had all year. We had to win today."

Moore relied on center fielder Denard Span to make a diving catch of a line drive by Enrique Hernandez for the first out in the ninth. He got Howie Kendrick to ground out before Seager singled.

"For us, the way we look at it is we won the series," said Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said, who went 0-for-3 and had his 17-game hitting streak snapped. "Whether we got a hit in the first or the ninth, it doesn't matter. We got a hit."

Moore retired 14 batters in a row before walking Seager with one out in the seventh. He then struck out Turner looking and forced Gonzalez to ground out to end the inning.

In the eighth, Moore issued a leadoff walk to Yasmani Grandal but struck out Chase Utley, forced Grandal at second and induced Joc Pederson to line out to center.

Dodgers starter Ross Stripling (3-5) allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings. He threw 90 pitches.

It was the second time Stripling started against the Giants, a team he no-hit for 7 1/3 innings in his major league debut on April 8 in San Francisco. In that game, manager Dave Roberts lifted Stripling, who got a no-decision, after 100 pitches with the no-hitter intact and turned it over to the Dodgers' bullpen. The Giants eventually won 3-2.

Brandon Belt's RBI single scored Brandon Crawford for a 1-0 San Francisco edge with one out in the fourth.

Panik followed with a two-run homer to right for a 3-0 advantage. It was Panik's eighth home run this season but his first since June 18, when he tagged Tampa Bay's Alex Colome.

Span's single in the sixth, scoring Panik, capped the scoring.
