ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Matt Shoemaker continued his dramatic turnaround and the Los Angeles Angels rode one big inning to a 7-2 victory over the Houston Astros Friday night at Angel Stadium.

Shoemaker gave up two runs and seven hits in 8 1/3 innings, striking out 11 and walking none while making 116 pitches. After 7 1/3 scoreless innings in his previous start, Shoemaker has given up two runs in 15 2/3 innings with 23 strikeouts and no walks in his past two starts.

Shoemaker had made 104 pitches through eight scoreless innings before Angels manager Mike Scioscia gave Shoemaker the ball to start the ninth for a chance at his first major league complete game and shutout.

But after Shoemaker gave up two singles sandwiched around a flyout, Scioscia came out with the hook. Cam Bedrosian walked the first batter he faced before getting a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Astros third baseman Colin Moran then singled home two runs -- both runs charged to Shoemaker -- to spoil the shutout bid.

It's a complete reversal for Shoemaker (3-5), who was demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake at the end of April after going 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA in his first five starts. He returned to the Angels only because of a rash of injuries to the pitching staff.

The Angels got all they would need, and then some, during a six-run third inning off Astros starter Mike Fiers (3-3). Kole Calhoun had an RBI single, Mike Trout cleared the bases with a three-run double and Albert Pujols had a two-run homer to essentially put the game away with the way Shoemaker was pitching.

Only once before the ninth inning did the Astros put a baserunner in scoring position. That came in the fourth inning when Jose Altuve singled and went to third on a single by Colby Rasmus. The inning ended when Shoemaker struck out Evan Gattis.

The Angels offense continued its upward trend. After scoring seven runs or more in just two of their first 24 games of the season, the Angels have scored seven or more in 11 of their last 24.

Fiers retired the first six Angels hitters before the roof caved in on him in the third inning. The Angels sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame, scoring six runs on six hits and a walk.

Calhoun got the scoring started with an RBI single and Trout followed with a three-run double. Pujols put the finishing touches on the inning with a two-run homer, the 570th of his career, which moved him past Rafael Palmeiro and into 12th place on the all-time list.

Meanwhile, Shoemaker was sharp. He allowed a single to Carlos Correa in the first inning but picked him off to end the frame.

Shoemaker struck out six of the next seven batters he faced until Altuve singled with one out in the fourth.

The Angels increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning when Gregorio Petit doubled and scored on a single by Yunel Escobar.

NOTES: Angels SS Andrelton Simmons, out since May 8 with a torn ligament in his left thumb, is progressing more quickly than anticipated and is hoping to be back soon. He had surgery on May 10 to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament and was projected to miss six to eight weeks. But he told reporters he hopes to be back in two weeks. Without Simmons, the Angels have used Cliff Pennington, Gregorio Petit and Brendan Ryan at short. ... Astros OF Carlos Gomez was scheduled to play his third game with Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday night and will play through Sunday with the Hooks as part of his rehab assignment. Gomez has been out since May 15 with bruised ribs but is hoping to return to the active roster by Tuesday. ... Pennington, on the DL since May 13 with a strained left hamstring, is expected to be activated Saturday. ... Astros RHP Will Harris went into the game with 21 consecutive scoreless appearances covering 21 1/3 innings going back to his first appearance of the season on April 7. ... Angels RHP Huston Street, out since April 24 with a strained left oblique, will throw a one-inning simulated game on Saturday at the club's spring complex in Arizona.
