DETROIT -- Jose Quintana got some early run support and Jose Abreu broke his homerless drought.

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura had trouble deciding which sight he enjoyed the most.

The White Sox's offense, which often goes cold when Quintana is on the mound, provided the left-hander with six runs during the first two innings en route to a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. The win salvaged the finale of a three-game series and ended the Tigers' eight-game winning streak.

Abreu capped off a five-run second with a two-run shot and the White Sox held on for the victory at Comerica Park. Chicago's cleanup hitter had gone 32 games without a home run.

"I think that's actually better than (Quintana) getting some runs," Ventura said. "They're both right up there. It's been a long time. It's been dragging on him."

Quintana (9-8), who has won his last four decisions, gave up just two runs after allowing a leadoff homer to Ian Kinsler. He walked one and struck out three.

Run support has been an issue for Quintana in recent seasons, including his last two starts. He gave up just one run in those outings but wound up with no-decisions.

"It was amazing. The offense was good; we had a lot of runs early," he said. "I tried to get a lot of quick outs after that, especially late in the game."

Quintana came into the game tied for second place in the American League in ERA and saw it rise marginally to 2.93.

"Q was great," Ventura said. "After giving up a leadoff homer, it seemed he snapped back in. I don't know if his focus can get any higher but it just seemed like he was spot on once he gave up that homer."

Avisail Garcia started the outburst with his third home run in three games. The White Sox had lost six of their seven.

Closer David Robertson, who gave up three solo homers the last time he faced Detroit, collected his 26th save with a scoreless ninth.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson left the game prior to the bottom of the first with a bruised left hand. He was hit by a pitch leading off the game and scored the first run. X-rays on the hand came back negative.

Ventura tweaked his lineup, moving usual leadoff hitter Adam Eaton to the No. 3 spot for the first time in his career. Eaton went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.

Miguel Cabrera also had a solo homer for the Tigers.

Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann (9-5) was rocked in his first start since coming off the 15-day disabled list. He allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing this season. Zimmermann had not started since June 30 because of a right neck strain.

Zimmermann felt some discomfort with his right lat during the abbreviated outing and received an MRI afterward. Tigers catcher Jarrod Saltamacchia indicated that Zimmermann was struggling even during his warmup.

"Everything was kind of going up and in to a righty and up and away to a lefty," Saltalamacchia said. "That was from not being able to reach and extend out there and get on top of the ball. But we felt maybe he'd go out there and it would be a little different. The first inning, the offspeed stuff was pretty sharp. But as the (second) inning went on and got longer and longer, it kind of flattened out a bit."

The second-place Tigers dropped three games behind American League Central Division leader Cleveland, which defeated Minnesota 9-2 on Thursday.

The White Sox led 6-1 until Tyler Collins' RBI single off Quintana in the seventh. Miguel Cabrera's one-out blast, his 25th of the season, made it 6-3 in the eighth and finished Quintana's day.

"He doesn't put too many pitches over the middle of the plate," Kinsler said. "Most of his pitchers are on the corners. Today was no exception."

NOTES: Tigers CF Cameron Maybin was not in the lineup after suffering a mildly sprained left thumb diving for a ball on Wednesday. Maybin underwent X-rays and an ultrasound, which revealed no tissue damage. ... Detroit DH Victor Martinez sat out because of an illness. He's expected to return to the lineup on Friday. ... White Sox 2B Brett Lawrie, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, also has fluid buildup in his knee, manager Robin Ventura said. Lawrie was placed on the DL July 27, retroactive to July 22. ... Chicago RHP Miguel Gonzalez will start the opener of a three-game series against Baltimore on Friday. Gonzalez started 95 games for the Orioles over the previous four seasons before he was released at the end of spring training. ... The White Sox lost their last seven games at Comerica Park.
