CHICAGO -- Things are falling into place again for the Chicago White Sox.

After allowing a season-high 20 hits in a lopsided loss Tuesday against the New York Yankees, the White Sox bounced back Wednesday night with a 5-0 win against New York to conclude a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (2-4), the White Sox's No. 5 starter, had his best outing of the season to earn the win and Chicago's offense rallied for four runs on four two-out hits and a walk in the second inning.

"We have won five series in a row," said Gonzalez, who earned his first win since June 9 by throwing seven scoreless innings. "I think that's really important. Guys are loose right now and getting after it. We're doing a really good job."

Chicago (44-41) is third in the American League Central, still 7 1/2 games back of the division-leading Cleveland Indians. The wild-card race is a lot closer.

The White Sox have closed within 2 1/2 games of the second AL wild-card spot, currently held by the Boston Red Sox, and sit just a game back of the Detroit Tigers and two behind the Houston Astros.

Chicago will host the Atlanta Braves in its final series before the All-Star break, with the first game Friday. The White Sox haven't clinched five consecutive series since Aug. 12-28, 2013, which was also when they last clinched a season series against the Yankees, whom they swept in a three-game set Aug. 5-7, 2013 at U.S. Cellular Field.

They've won four of their last five games and seven of their past 10, helping make up for a near two-month slide from the top spot in the division.

"The pitching's been great," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "Offensively, we've been getting it. Everybody seems to be contributing in one way or another and it's nice. We're playing better baseball. It's that simple. We're playing all-around better baseball."

Rookie shortstop Tim Anderson led the way offensively for the White Sox, going 1-for-4 and lining a two-run double off Yankees starter Michael Pineda (3-8) in Chicago's four-run second.

Pineda took the loss for New York (41-43), going six innings and allowing six runs on five hits and three walks. The Yankees, who were led offensively by Didi Gregorious (3-for-3) and Jacoby Ellsbury (3-for-4), have lost seven of their past 11 games and are 2-4 to start a 10-game road trip. They will finish the trip against the American League Central's top team, the Cleveland Indians.

"We can't get over the hump," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's a number of different things. It's pitching at times. It's swinging the bats at times. You look at the two games we lost here, we didn't hit with runners on, and that was the difference."

Gonzalez allowed hits and baserunners in five of his seven innings, but worked around them without damage done. He struck out three and walked one, protecting the early lead he was given.

The Yankees nearly rallied in the ninth, after a 6-minute, 24-second video review that overturned half of a game-ending double play, but White Sox closer David Robertson got the third out by fanning Chase Headley with runners on second and third.

Brett Lawrie sparked Chicago's rally in the second with his single to right field, which was followed by a walk to Dioner Navarro, a run-scoring single by Avisail Garcia and a ground-rule double by J.B. Shuck for the second run. Anderson followed Shuck's double with one of his own, plating Garcia and Shuck.

"Slider up to Garcia, fastball up to Shuck and he didn't get his slider away from Anderson, and that was the difference," Girardi said of Pineda in the second. "He started with two outs and he didn't make the pitches he needed to get out of the inning. That was the difference."

NOTES: The White Sox placed C Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, the same injury that put him on the DL earlier this season. Chicago purchased the contract of C Omar Narvaez from Triple-A Charlotte to handle the backup catching role with Avila out. ... Yankees manager Joe Girardi said OF Carlos Beltran is still dealing with a hamstring issue, which is why he was the DH in the series finale Wednesday against the White Sox. Beltran bumped full-time DH Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup. ... The Yankees suspended top prospect SS Jorge Mateo for an unspecified violation of team policy. Mateo will not play in the Futures Game on Sunday at Petco Park in San Diego. ... An issue with a water pipe in foul territory near third base at U.S. Cellular Field prevented the White Sox and Yankees from taking batting practice on the field. The problem was fixed before the game, and each team took batting practice indoors.
