CINCINNATI -- Adam Duvall's two-run home run in the eighth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the resumption of a suspended game Saturday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Duvall's homer, his third, came on a 1-0 pitch from right-hander Jonathan Broxton and just barely cleared the right field wall with a runner aboard.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 30th save. J.J. Hoover (8-1) earned the victory.

Broxton (2-5) took the loss for St. Louis (88-53) which saw its lead over the Pirates in the National League Central be reduced to 3 1/2 games.

John Lackey gave the St. Louis Cardinals just what they needed Friday night before rain suspended their game with the score tied 2-2 in the eighth.

Lackey's two earned runs allowed and 10 strikeouts over seven innings were a welcome occurrence for a Cardinals' rotation which struggled in recent games.

"He was terrific in some high leverage situations," manager Mike Matheny said Friday. "He just got better as the heat got turned up."

Reds catcher Ramon Cabrera hit his first career home run to put them ahead 2-1 in the second inning.

Cardinals second baseman Greg Garcia responded with his second career homer to tie the score in the fourth before heavy rain postponed the proceedings until Saturday.

When play resumed Saturday afternoon, pinch runner Pete Kozma was on first for the Cardinals with no outs in the eighth.

Hoover returned to the mound for Cincinnati on Saturday and struck out two batters with a walk in one inning of work.

Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases to increase his major-league- leading total to 56. He's now 10-for-10 on stolen-base attempts in his career against Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.

NOTES: Cardinals C Cody Stanley was suspended 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Stanley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sept. 1. He's batting .400 with a double and three RBIs in nine games. Major League Baseball announced Saturday that Stanley tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone and that the suspension is effective immediately. This is the 26-year-old Stanley's second suspension. In March 2012 he was suspended 50 games for testing positive for Methylhexaneamine and Tamoxifen, violating baseball's minor league drug program. ... St. Louis recalled C Ed Easley on Friday knowing Stanley's suspension was coming.
