ST. LOUIS -- The Cincinnati Reds missed out on a two-out chance to snap an eighth-inning tie. The St. Louis Cardinals didn't miss their chance to break the deadlock.

After Cincinnati left the bases loaded, St. Louis second baseman Kolten Wong delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to plate the game-winning run as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep with a 2-1 verdict Sunday night at Busch Stadium.

Wong's deep liner to left fielder Skip Schumaker scored center fielder Jon Jay, who led off the inning with a double and moved to third on an infield out by catcher Yadier Molina.

In their half of the inning, the Reds (5-7) filled the bases with singles by third baseman Todd Frazier and second baseman Brandon Phillips, and a walk to right fielder Jay Bruce. But starter Adam Wainwright (2-1) induced a first-pitch fielder's choice bouncer out of shortstop Zack Cozart to end the inning.

Wainwright scattered seven hits in eight innings, allowing one run with two walks and four strikeouts. Reliever Jordan Walden pitched around a leadoff single by center fielder Brennan Boesch in the ninth for his first save.

Cincinnati starter Mike Leake (0-1) absorbed a tough-luck loss despite working a complete game, yielding only four hits and two runs with no walks and three strikeouts. Leake threw 66 of his 86 pitches for strikes.

St. Louis third baseman Matt Carpenter started the game in the best possible way, clouting a leadoff home run over the center-field wall. It was his second homer of the year and the fifth leadoff homer of his career.

Cincinnati evened the score in the third with a two-out rally. After a single by first baseman Joey Votto and a walk to Frazier, Phillips blooped an RBI single to right-center.

Pitching ruled the game's early portion otherwise. Leake retired 14 straight after a one-out single by left fielder Matt Holliday in the first, while Wainwright mowed through seven in a row following Phillips' game-tying hit.

NOTES: St. Louis placed OF Randal Grichuk (back strain) on the 15-day disabled list and called up INF Dean Anna from Triple-A Memphis. Grichuk was injured during a workout in the weight room. ... Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton (sore right groin) didn't start but was available off the bench. Hamilton left Saturday's game in the eighth inning after getting injured while beating out an infield hit. ... Cardinals LF Matt Holliday (mid-back tightness) was back in the lineup Sunday night. Holliday departed Saturday's game after one inning.
