ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nick Tropeano and three relievers combined for a eight-hitter in the Los Angeles Angels' 2-0 win over the Oakland A's on Thursday in the finale of a four-game series between the American League West teams.

The Angels' only hit off three A's pitchers was a two-run homer by right fielder Kole Calhoun that provided all the offense in the game, giving L.A. a split in the series.

Fernando Salas (seventh inning), Joe Smith (eighth) and Huston Street (ninth, fifth save) pitched the final three innings in relief of Tropeano (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to start in place of C.J. Wilson.

Calhoun also had the defensive play of the game, going into the right-field corner to make a catch on a drive by A's right fielder Josh Reddick with two on and two outs in the eighth.

A’s starter Jesse Chavez (0-1) pitched well for six innings, allowing only the Calhoun homer.

Angels catcher Drew Butera led off the third with a grounder to A's third baseman Brett Lawrie, whose throwing error allowed Butera to reach. After second baseman Johnny Giavotella's sacrifice bunt, Calhoun launched Chavez's 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center for a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Tropeano pitched efficiently in the early innings. Only once did the A's put a runner in scoring position in the first four innings, when first baseman Ike Davis led off the second with a walk and went to third on a two-out single by second baseman Eric Sogard.

Tropeano, though, got the final out of the inning with a strikeout of shortstop Marcus Semien.

Semien doubled with one out in the fifth but was stranded.

NOTES: Angels LF Matt Joyce was dropped to No. 6 in the batting order for the second game in a row. In the absence of LF Josh Hamilton, Joyce was expected to be the primary cleanup hitter. But going into Thursday's game, he was hitting just .152 and still without a home run. He was acquired from the Rays in an off-season trade with Tampa Bay for RHP Kevin Jepsen. ... A's INF/OF Ben Zobrist, recovering from a sore left knee, took part in pregame warmups and batting practice. Barring any setbacks, he was expected to be available for pinch hitting. ... Former Angel Vladimir Guerrero visited with players and staff before the game. He is in town to be a part of the pregame ceremony Saturday honoring CF Mike Trout for winning the 2014 American League MVP. Guerrero posed for pictures with Angels batting coach Don Baylor and Trout. The trio represents the organization's MVPs (Baylor 1979, Guerrero 2004). ... With two homers against the Angels in the series, A's DH Billy Butler has 14 career homers against them, the most against any opponent other than the White Sox (18).
