TORONTO -- There was a stretch earlier this year when Drew Hutchison struggled to get to the fifth inning.

That seems to be behind him now. The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander pitched his second career shutout Monday in a 6-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The 24-year-old struck out eight in holding the White Sox to four hits and no walks in a game that took two hours and 10 minutes.

First baseman Justin Smoak had a two-run homer, third baseman Josh Donaldson had a solo homer, and left fielder Chris Colabello had a two-run single.

"He was sick tonight, too," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Hutchison. "Sometimes you have your best games when you're not feeling so good. He was really hitting on everything.

"He had the good, exploding fastball, some good breaking balls and mixed in some good changeups. So he had them swinging, he was in the zone. ...He was in total control."

Hutchison reminded White Sox manager Robin Ventura of another Blue Jays right-hander, Pat Hentgen, who won the 1996 Cy Young Award when he was with Toronto.

"The way he was throwing, just his mannerisms and everything, he looked a lot like Pat (Hentgen) used to," Ventura said. "He was throwing strikes with the fastball, riding it up, and had a good breaking ball. He was good. He knew we were hurting when we're behind by that many runs and he was pumping strikes."

Hutchison (4-1) picked up his first win since May 9 and gave the Blue Jays (21-26) their second win in a row while the White Sox (19-23) have lost their past three games.

"I did a good job of getting ahead and had a really good sinker tonight, got a lot of early swing ground balls and got double plays," Hutchison said. "That was the key to getting deep in the game and keeping the pitch count down.

"I really didn't feel great the first few innings. I thought maybe the third or fourth I really got it going. I was more worried about just filling the zone and being aggressive more than anything else."

Hutchison's first career shutout was May 16, 2014, against the Texas Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

He did not want to make a big deal about how he was feeling Monday.

"Things happen, you're not going to feel great every start," Hutchison said. "I just went out there and was able to do my job. If I pitched bad it would have been the same way."

White Sox right-hander Hector Noesi (0-4) allowed five hits, three walks and five runs in seven innings in his first start since May 9. He struck out four. His two previous outings before Monday were in relief.

"I was just going out there and trying to do my job and make pitches down in the zone," Noesi said. "I was not thinking about the long time that I haven't started, you know. In my mind I'm here to start, that's what I want to prove to anybody that I can start."

The Blue Jays took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Shortstop Jose Reyes, who was activated from the disabled list Monday, led off with a double, and Donaldson walked.

The White Sox failed to turn a double play on a grounder to second off the bat of designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez missed the bag before throwing to first. Donaldson was safe at second, and Encarnacion was out at first.

Colabello came through with a two-out, two-run single up the middle. Smoak followed with his third home run of the season, a shot to right on a 1-0 pitch.

Failing to turn the double play was the key.

"It should be turned, it ended up hurting us," Ventura said. "After that, Hector battled and got through it, but the only thing that was good about the game was that it was fast. He's out of the inning if we end up playing cleanly in that first inning."

Donaldson hit his 10th homer of the season with two outs in the second to extend the lead to 5-0.
