Royals 3, Angels 2 (11): Mike Moustakas homered to lead off the 11th inning as Kansas City edged host Los Angeles in the opening game of their American League Division Series.

Moustakas drilled the third pitch of the inning from Fernando Salas (0-1) over the wall in right for his first homer since Aug. 25. Greg Holland struck out two while tossing a flawless bottom of the 11th for his first postseason save.

Danny Duffy (1-0) pitched one scoreless inning to pick up the victory in a contest in which both teams had just four hits. Angels starter Jered Weaver gave up two runs and three in seven innings, while Kansas City’s Jason Vargas allowed two runs and three hits in six frames.

Los Angeles had numerous chances to take the lead, and the sixth and seventh innings ended with Royals right fielder Nori Aoki making impressive catches on the warning track. The Angels had two runners aboard in the eighth and ninth innings, but again failed to get the needed clutch hit while Kansas City stranded two runners in the top of the 10th.

The Royals struck in the third when Moustakas drew a two-out walk and scored on Alcides Escobar’s double before Los Angeles tied it in the bottom of the inning on Chris Iannetta’s homer to left. Alex Gordon reached on a double to start the fifth and eventually scored on Omar Infante’s sacrifice fly to give Kansas City a 2-1 edge before Angels third baseman David Freese hammered a tying homer to left in the bottom of the frame.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Freese has hit eight postseason homers. … Kansas City RHP Kelvin Herrera (forearm tightness) departed after walking Freese to start the seventh. … Angels LF Josh Hamilton went 0-of-5 and made the final out of the game after missing 22 of the final 23 regular-season games due to a shoulder injury.
