Padres 2, Giants 1: Tyson Ross pitched eight shutout innings and Yasmani Grandal homered as host San Diego edged San Francisco.
Ross (2-2) allowed four hits and one walk and struck out a season-high nine before exiting. The game’s first run scored on a passed ball by Giants catcher Hector Sanchez in the first inning and Grandal homered in the eighth for a much-needed insurance run.
Huston Street gave up a ninth-inning homer to Brandon Belt in a 31-pitch outing and struck out Sanchez with a runner on second for his sixth save in as many chances. The Padres improve to 8-9 despite being last in the majors with 47 runs scored.
Chris Denorfia smacked a triple to right-center field in the first inning as one of just four hits allowed by Giants starter Matt Cain (0-3). On a full-count pitch to Jedd Gyorko, ball four got away from Sanchez and Denorfia dashed home.
Cain struck out eight and walked two in seven innings while dropping to 7-12 all-time against San Diego. Juan Gutierrez served up Grandal’s booming pinch-hit blast to right in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The one-run game was the eighth in a row for the Giants, matching the club record set when the franchise was located in New York in 1910. … San Diego 3B Chase Headley (biceps) missed his third consecutive start, while OF Carlos Quentin (knee) will head to extended spring training in Arizona next week prior to starting a rehab assignment. … San Francisco C Buster Posey struck out as a pinch hitter in the eighth and is 1-for-18 over his last six games.
