Mets 4, Nationals 3: Juan Lagares ripped the go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning and Eric Young Jr. recorded two hits and scored twice as New York snapped its 12-game home losing streak to Washington.

Travis d'Arnaud slapped a two-run double in the first inning for the Mets, who have won five of their last six to get within 6 1/2 games of Pittsburgh in the race for the second wild card in the National League with 14 contests remaining on their schedule. Dillon Gee (7-7) allowed three runs on a season-high nine hits in 5 1/3 innings to record his third win in nine decisions.

Anthony Rendon homered to lead off the fifth inning and went 3-for-5 for the second straight contest for the Nationals, who remained 8 1/2 games ahead of second-place Atlanta in the NL East. Adam LaRoche recorded an RBI single and scored on Wilson Ramos' base hit in the third inning as Washington's magic number to clinch the division was reduced to eight by virtue of the Braves' loss to Texas.

Young singled to lead off the fifth inning against Gio Gonzalez (8-10) and came around to score on Lagares' double into the left-field corner to give New York a 4-3 lead. Two relievers bridged the gap to Jenrry Mejia, who stranded Denard Span on second base in the ninth for his 26th save.

The Mets seized a 3-0 lead in the first inning as a double into the left-field corner by d'Arnaud plated Young and Lagares while Lucas Duda scored after his slide jarred the ball from the glove of Ramos. LaRoche and Ramos had RBI singles in the third before Rendon forged a 3-3 tie with his career-high 20th homer.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzalez, who permitted four runs - three earned - and six hits, slammed the ball in manager Matt Williams' hand as he was taken out of the game with two outs in the seventh inning. Williams sought out Gonzalez in the dugout between innings and the two went into the locker room to further the conversation. ... Young is 7-for-11 in his last three contests. ... Washington's Nate Schierholtz received the start as RF Jayson Werth was sidelined with what Williams termed "dead legs," although the slugger also is dealing with the flu.
