Twins 2, Mariners 0: Sam Fuld homered while going 3-for-3 with two steals and Phil Hughes pitched 7 1/3 solid innings as visiting Minnesota blanked Seattle.
Brian Dozier added a sacrifice fly as the Twins won for only the fourth time in 15 games. Casey Fien extinguished a Mariners’ threat in the eighth by inducing Robinson Cano to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Hughes (9-5) struck out eight and gave up eight hits without issuing a walk to break a two-start losing streak. Glen Perkins sailed through a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 24 opportunities.
Chris Young (8-5) was charged with two runs and six hits over seven-plus innings as his three-game winning streak came to an end. Young allowed Fuld’s homer with two out in the fifth and departed after the first two batters reached in the eighth, with Dozier plating a run later in the inning against reliever Yoervis Medina.
Michael Saunders and James Jones delivered consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth to knock Hughes out of the game. Cano followed with a bouncer to second and Dozier ran Jones back toward first and tagged him before flipping the ball to first to narrowly retire Cano.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota placed RHP Ricky Nolasco (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled C-OF Chris Herrmann from Triple-A Rochester. … Seattle recalled C Jesus Sucre from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the roster spot of C John Buck, who was designated for assignment after Monday’s game. … Dozier (16 homers) was selected to be one of the American League’s four representatives in Monday’s Home Run Derby at Target Field as part of All-Star Week.
