Cardinals 2, Brewers 0: Adam Wainwright scattered seven hits in his third shutout of the season as host St. Louis evened the series at one game apiece.
Wainwright (19-9) joined Clayton Kershaw as the only 19-game winners in the majors, striking out seven for his ninth career shutout to keep the first-place Cardinals 2 1/2 games ahead of Pittsburgh in the National League Central. Jhonny Peralta delivered an RBI single and Matt Holliday scored for St. Louis.
Wainwright won his fourth straight start and also broke up a no-hitter by Milwaukee right-hander Mike Fiers (6-3) with a two-out single in the sixth inning, one of only three hits by the Cardinals. Fiers struck out seven and was charged with two runs - one earned - over seven innings but it wasn't enough to prevent the Brewers from falling 2 1/2 behind the Pirates for the second wild card.
Fiers carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh before Holliday drew a one-out walk and Matt Adams followed with a single to center that was bobbled by Carlos Gomez, allowing Holliday to race home from first with the first run. Adams advanced to second on the play and doubled the lead on Peralta's single to center.
Wainwright stranded seven runners through seven innings, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, and finished strong by retiring the side in order in the ninth to register his fifth complete game of the year
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wainwright registered his sixth career complete game versus Milwaukee, one more than Hall of Famer Greg Maddux for the most against any NL opponent . ... CF Carlos Gomez and LF Gerardo Parra each collected two hits for the Brewers in the second of their nine-game road trip. ... Adams was in an 0-for-11 rut before delivering the single that wound up plating the decisive run.
