Brewers 6, Cardinals 2: Scooter Gennett collected two hits and three RBIs while Jean Segura went 3-for-4 and scored twice as host Milwaukee halted its nine-game losing streak.

Khris Davis belted a two-run homer and Jonathan Lucroy drove in a run for the Brewers, who climbed within three games of first-place St. Louis in the National League Central and moved one ahead of Atlanta for the second wild-card spot. Mike Fiers (5-2) worked 6 2/3 strong innings, allowing two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts en route to his fifth win in six starts this season.

Jhonny Peralta went deep and Oscar Taveras added an RBI for the Cardinals, who had their six-game winning streak halted. John Lackey (13-9) struck out six but was tagged for six runs and nine hits in six frames.

Gennett gave Milwaukee the lead in the third inning, following singles by Lyle Overbay and Segura with one of his own that plated both runners after a sacrifice by Fiers. The Brewers doubled their advantage in the fifth as Gennett delivered an RBI double and scored on Lucroy's single.

Peralta got St. Louis on the board in the sixth with a two-out solo blast, but Milwaukee added two in the bottom of the frame on Davis' 22nd shot of the season. The Cardinals cut the deficit to four runs in the seventh as Peter Bourjos delivered a one-out double and scored on pinch-hitter Taveras' infield single, but they were unable to get any closer.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Milwaukee OF Carlos Gomez (wrist) entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. ... Brewers RF Ryan Braun went 1-for-4 in his return after missing two games to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. ... Lackey yielded more than two earned runs for only the second time in seven starts with St. Louis.
