Phillies 2, Marlins 1: Marlon Byrd belted an RBI double and added a key outfield assist as Philadelphia defeated visiting Miami for the second straight night.

Kyle Kendrick (9-12) yielded one run on seven hits and struck out six over 6 1/3 innings to win for the 13th time in 16 career decisions against the Marlins. Ben Revere recorded two hits and scored a run while Maikel Franco knocked in one for the Phillies, who improved to 7-5 in September.

Garrett Jones belted a solo homer for Miami, which dropped its fourth straight to remain 6 1/2 games out in the race for the National League’s second wild card. Marlins starter Brad Hand (3-7) allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over six innings to lose for the fifth time in his last six decisions.

Revere singled and moved up on a wild pitch before scoring on a base hit by Franco, who later came home on Byrd’s double to right-center for a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jones, playing right field for the first time this season in place of injured slugger Giancarlo Stanton, hit his 15th homer in the second to cut the deficit in half.

Byrd threw Justin Bour out at the plate on Reed Johnson’s 1,000th career hit in the seventh and reliever Jake Diekman struck out Christian Yelich with two on to end the threat. Ken Giles came on to pitch a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth for his 37th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Giles had retired 25 consecutive batters until Miami CF Marcell Ozuna walked with two outs in the eighth. … The Marlins recalled C J.T. Realmuto from Double-A Jacksonville, where he hit in all seven postseason games to help the Suns win the Southern League Championship. … The Phillies are 11-5 in their last 16 games against NL East opponents.
