Royals 6, Rays 0: James Shields struck out 10 over seven dominant innings against his former team as visiting Kansas City defeated Tampa Bay in the opener of a three-game series.

Alex Gordon and Omar Infante each recorded three hits and two RBIs while Eric Hosmer went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Royals, who have won nine of their last 11 against the Rays. Shields (9-4), pitching at Tampa Bay for the first time since being traded to Kansas City after the 2012 season, allowed three hits and one walk.

Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi (4-8), who was one of the players to come over from the Royals for Shields and Wade Davis, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight over six innings. Ben Zobrist collected a pair of hits for the Rays, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.

Kansas City loaded the bases with one down in the second inning and did not score before one-out singles by Hosmer and Salvador Perez ignited a rally in the third. Gordon followed with a single to right field to plate Hosmer and Perez came home on Infante’s groundout for a 2-0 lead.

The Royals added two runs in the eighth as Gordon led off with a two-base hit and scored on Infante’s bloop double to right before Mike Moustakas’ sacrifice fly made it 4-0. Shields retired 13 of the last 14 he faced, Davis struck out two in a perfect eighth and Scott Downs worked the ninth to finish the shutout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Shields, who has won seven straight decisions against American League East opponents, registered his 48th Tropicana Field victory – more than any pitcher in history at Tampa Bay’s home stadium. … Kansas City OF Lorenzo Cain added two hits, stole two bases and scored a run. … The Rays announced Monday they have signed highly-regarded 16-year old SS Adrian Rondon from the Dominican Republic for a $2.95 million bonus.
