Marlins 7, Astros 3: Giancarlo Stanton belted a go-ahead, three-run double in the second inning and visiting Miami held on to defeat Houston for its sixth victory in the last seven games.

Jordany Valdespin drilled a two-run homer in the ninth while Christian Yelich recorded two hits, scored twice and knocked in another for the Marlins. Tom Koehler (7-7) labored through five innings, allowing three runs and nine hits, but earned his second victory in his last nine starts.

Jason Castro launched a two-run homer, Chris Carter added two singles and an RBI and Jose Altuve had three hits for the Astros, who dropped their seventh in nine games. Houston starter Jarred Cosart (9-7) yielded five runs – all in the first two innings – on seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 frames.

Casey McGehee’s two-out RBI single opened the scoring in the first inning, but Castro’s blast into the right-field seats gave Houston the lead in the bottom of the frame. Yelich slapped an RBI single to tie it in the second before Stanton lined a two-out double to the gap in left-center for a 5-2 edge.

Carter’s run-scoring single with none out in the fifth brought the Astros within two, but Koehler averted more damage with the help of a double play. Adeiny Hechavarria reached on an error to open the ninth and scored his second run when Valdespin lifted his first homer of the season to the opposite field in left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yelich recorded at least two hits for the 12th time in 21 games during July. … Altuve extended his hitting streak to eight games and Carter has reached base in 16 of his last 17 games. … The Marlins improved to 10-4 in interleague play while the Astros dropped to 4-9.
