Reds 2, Pirates 1: Ryan Ludwick delivered the go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning as visiting Cincinnati took three of four on the road from Pittsburgh.

Ludwick also singled in the ninth to account for two of the Reds’ five hits while Joey Votto and Todd Frazier each scored. Tony Cingrani (2-2) yielded one run on six hits while striking out seven in six innings and two relievers tossed a scoreless frame apiece before Jonathan Broxton retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

Brandon Cumpton (0-1), who made his season debut in place of injured Wandy Rodriguez, allowed two runs on four hits over a career high-tying seven frames, but also hit three batters with a pitch. Neil Walker was the only Pirate to finish with two hits and scored the lone run for Pittsburgh, which has dropped 11 of 14 since opening the season with six wins in its first nine contests.

Pittsburgh mounted its only offense off Cingrani in the opening frame, getting a one-one walk from Walker and an infield single by Andrew McCutchen before Pedro Alvarez’s grounder slid under the glove of second baseman Brandon Phillips, allowing Walker to cross. Cingrani faced another threat in the third when Walker and McCutchen reached again with no outs, but the left-hander easily retired the next three batters.

The score remained unchanged until Cumpton ran into trouble in the sixth when he hit both Votto and Frazier. Ludwick squared up the first pitch he saw after Frazier reached base and ripped it into center for his first hit of the series.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Reds C Devin Mesoraco, who had hit safely in every game he has played this season, went 0-for-4 to end his career-best 11-game hitting streak. … McCutchen went 1-for-3 to finish 8-for-13 in this series and the reigning National League MVP is batting 17-for-34 with four homers over a nine-game hitting streak against Cincinnati (including last year's wild-card game). … Three of Cumpton’s six major-league starts (and four of his seven major-league outings) have come against the Reds.
